Armstrong’s comment about beauty, “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience,” is very similar to my own views on beauty.  If something is truly beautiful, I think it should be looked at as an experience. I think beauty in our culture/community is regarded very differently. Personally, I think the American mainstream society as a whole views beauty in a materialistic sense, not necessarily as something that can move you to cry or rather make you feel any strong emotion. I believe for the most part, our society is beginning to change our opinions regarding beauty, to a more accepting and not so black and white point of view. I believe this would be a pretty monumental change because for so long, most of our society has only thought of beauty in an artificial sense and not as an “experience” as Armstrong expressed. An example of this change would be modern photography. Nowadays, because everyone has phones with built in cameras, anyone can capture beautiful moments. Then they share these breathtaking pictures to social media and everyone gets to experience that beauty with the photographer. Due to all the beauty being shared, I believe we are starting to realize beauty doesn’t always come from materialistic goods, it often comes from experiences that will stay with you forever.

I really enjoyed reading this free write. I have to agree! What do you think this slow change in perspective could make possible?
