The chapter I chose from They Say/I Say was “They Art of Summarizing”. I chose this chapter because I find that I don’t always summarize my paragraphs very well and when I attempt to, I often will add more to the thought that I hadn’t discussed previously. One of the beneficial strategies discussed in the chapter was using signal verbs that fit the action. This does quotes justice by adding emphasis to what the author is trying to say as well as adding an exciting finish to a paragraph. Another good strategy was knowing where you are going with an idea. This was something I had a difficult time with because I found that once I began with one idea, that would lead to another and another and so on. Lots of times when summarizing, I accidentally introduce another concept and consequently confuse my reader.

Before: Jonah Lehrer also expresses his own concern about the arts. He believes that, “science needs the arts. We need to find a place for the artist within the experimental process.” Lehrer believes that in many cases, art influences all types of different sciences such as physics, neuroscience, psychology, etc. To a point, I agree. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that science needs the arts, but I would say in many cases that art influences science. Bohr himself said, “when it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry.” and that was coming from one of the most reputable scientists of all time.

To my understanding, Bohr and Lehrer both appear to agree that art influences science and I can comprehend that belief. There seems to be evidence (according to Lehrer) listed in the areas of science listed above, indicating that art played a role in these fields. While that does make sense, I am still not completely on board with Lehrer’s claim that “science needs the arts.”
