Yo Yo Ma’s essay “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education”, brought up many interesting points about art being a part of education. As far as surrounding context goes, his essay was published by World-Post in January 2014 and was written by Yo Yo Ma himself. I noticed in Ma’s bio that his list of awards was extremely lengthy, making him a very credible author. The imposed context, or reason why someone would read the essay, would be to more informed about making the STEM program become the STEAM program so that art could be more incorporated in education. Finally, the intentional context is that its important to include art into children’s education because it activates the empathetic part of your brain and makes you think a different way.

Three terms or concepts I didn’t know were:

Kennedy Center: A renowned center for the performing arts.

Berggruen Institute on Governance: An institute that develops ideas to create political ideas and social institutions.

Bandwidth: The energy or mental capacity that is needed to deal with something.
