After reading “Is it OK to make art?” a second time, I definitely picked up on more than I did originally. Overall, I noticed who said what better because I wasn’t as focused on what they said themselves. I don’t think I reacted very differently, just less shocked at what the Effective Altruists very rigid beliefs were. I still feel the same way as I did before when I read the article the first time. I believe art is a very healing and beautiful thing that people should never start creating. One of my favorite quotes from this article was when Southan mentioned Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 Oscar acceptance speech when Soderbergh said “I think this world would be unlivable without art”. I think decoding the text definitely did help me as far as annotating the text and looking up definitions for words I didn’t know. I noticed how well it helped especially the second time reading through the text because I saw my notes that I left the first time and instantly remember the surprise I felt after hearing about the EA’s views. It also allowed me to see what I thought was important before and therefore let’s me focus on that part of the text even further. I absolutely benefited from decoding the text and reading through it a second time.
